The combustion process includes the pre-heating of combustion air in structures called regenerators. The regenerators are huge columns of honeycombshaped stack of bricks, that is, heat exchangers, through which combustion air flows into the melter 50% of the time and through which the exhaust gasses flow the other 50%. Their purpose on the exhaust cycle is to absorb as much heat as possible from the exhaust gases so that the hot bricks can pre-heat the combustion air on the intake cycle.
